When Should Orthotics Be Replaced?

Custom foot orthotics are designed to provide long-term support, but they do not last forever. Over time, materials compress, foot mechanics change, and wear can affect how well your orthotics perform.

Knowing when to consider replacement helps ensure continued comfort, support, and symptom relief.

Typical Lifespan of Custom Orthotics

For most patients, custom orthotics are effective for approximately 2 to 5 years, depending on:

  • Body weight and activity level

  • Occupational demands (standing, walking, or lifting)

  • Foot structure and biomechanics

  • The materials used in fabrication

  • Shoe type and frequency of use

Even if orthotics appear intact, performance may decline as materials fatigue.

Signs Your Orthotics May Need Replacement

You may benefit from reassessment or replacement if you notice:

  • Return of foot, heel, knee, hip, or lower back pain

  • Reduced comfort or support

  • Visible wear, cracking, or loss of shape

  • Orthotics no longer fitting properly in footwear

  • Changes in activity level, footwear, or overall health

Orthotics that are no longer providing proper support may contribute to symptoms rather than relieve them.

Why Reassessment Matters

Feet and lower limb mechanics can change over time due to:

  • Aging

  • Weight changes

  • Injury or surgery

  • Changes in work or activity levels

A reassessment allows orthotics to be updated to match current needs rather than relying on outdated support.

What to Expect at Fit to Walk

At Fit to Walk, orthotics are prescription-based and fabricated on site using a plaster-based model to guide precise construction. Replacement orthotics are based on:

  • Review of your current symptoms

  • Evaluation of existing orthotics

  • Updated assessment as required

Adjustments or refurbishment may be appropriate in some cases, while full replacement may be recommended in others.

When to Book an Appointment

If your orthotics are more than two years old, or if symptoms have returned, it may be time for review.

Patients may contact the clinic directly or consult their physician for a referral.
